Alignment Page Does Not Print in Windows XP - HP Deskjet F4200 Series Printer

This video explains how to fix your printer when an alignment page error displays on your
computer or an ‘E’ displays or blinks on the printers control panel.
If there is any packing material left inside the product, the alignment page will not print.
Let’s check to make sure there are no packing materials inside the printer.
Check for packing materials by first removing all the paper from the paper tray.
Next open the front access panel and look for and remove any packing material that may
be inside the printer. Make sure you also look for packing material in the paper tray
as well. Once you have removed everything, you can
close the front access panel and then move on to the next step.
Close the front access panel Often the condition of the paper or the paper
not being loaded properly can cause a failed alignment.
Remove any wrinkled or damaged paper from the stack. Make sure that there are at least
10 sheets of plain white paper, but no more than 25 sheets of paper in the stack. The
printer may hold more sheets of paper but this number of pages is best for testing.
Make sure all of the paper is the same size and type, then tap it on a flat surface to
get the edges perfectly aligned. Finally, load the paper and adjust the guides
so that they are snug against the stack. If the cartridges are not fully installed
or still have the protective pink tape on them, an alignment page will not print.
First press the power button to turn the printer on.
Open the cartridge door. Let the carriage settle into the dock, then
gently press the cartridge down. The cartridge releases, so you can remove it.
Remove the cartridge, be careful not to touch the copper-colored electrical contacts or
ink nozzles. This can cause clogs, ink failure, and poor electrical connections.
Inspect the cartridge. If the protective pink tape is still attached to the cartridge, pull
the pink pull-tab on the cartridge to remove the tape.
After you have inspected the cartridge, you may re-insert it back into its proper slot.
After both cartridges have been re-inserted, you can close the cartridge access door.
The printer will automatically print an alignment page when you close the cartridge access door.
If the alignment page prints successfully, you do not need to continue troubleshooting,
but you must complete the alignment process for your printer to work correctly. If the
alignment page does not print or fails, move on to the next step.
To complete the alignment process, wait until the alignment page has printed and then lift
the scanner lid. Place the alignment sheet face down on the
scanner glass in the right-front corner with the top of the page to the right.
Close the scanner lid. Now press the Scan button on the printers
control panel. This will scan the alignment sheet and align the cartridges.
To align the printer from your computer, you must first finish the software installation.
Insert the software CD that shipped with the printer. Follow the on-screen instructions
to install the software.
If you no longer have the software CD that shipped with your printer, go to hp.com/support
to download the latest drivers for your printer. Once downloaded, open the saved file and follow
the on-screen instructions to install the software.
Once the software installation is completed you can align the printer manually from the
toolbox. Click the Start button or the Windows icon.
Click Control Panel. Click Printers, and then right click the appropriate printer.
Click Printing Preferences and choose the features tab. Then click Printer Services.
On the Printer Services tab click Align the Print Cartridges.
Then Click Print Page. An alignment page will print.
Once the alignment page is printed, lift the scanner lid.
Place the alignment page on the front-right corner of the scanner glass with the print
side down. Lower the scanner lid.
Press the Scan button on the printers control panel. The printer will align the cartridges.
If the printer will not pick up a piece of paper to print an alignment page, running
the ‘Paper Feed Cleaning’ utility will resolve the issue by cleaning the rollers
that pick up the paper. Click the Start button or the Windows icon.
Click Control Panel. Click Printers and then right Click the appropriate printer.
Click Printing Preferences and choose the Features tab.
Then Click Printer Services. On the Printer Services tab Click ‘Paper
Feed Cleaning’. Follow the on screen instructions on the paper feed cleaning dialog box to complete
the process.
Try printing an alignment page again.
Click the Start button or the Windows icon. Click Control Panel. Click Printers, and then
right click the appropriate printer. Click Printing Preferences and choose the
features tab. Then click Printer Services. On the Printer Services tab click Align the
Print Cartridges. Then Click Print Page. An alignment page will
print. Once the alignment page is printed, lift the
scanner lid. Place the alignment page on the front-right
corner of the scanner glass with the print side down.
