Are Sit Ups Good?

Uploaded by OneMinuteSixPack on 14.07.2012

Hi I'm Nick and welcome to One Minute Six Pack. Today’s video is an answer to the
question “Are sit ups good?” Well, sit ups are really neither good nor bad. I think
the better questions are “How effective are sit ups?” and “Are sit ups good for
losing belly fat?” I’ll answer each, one at a time. First, “How effective are sit
ups?” Well, if you’re brand new to working out, sit ups, and crunches for the matter,
will definitely improve your ab strength. The problem is, however, that these exercises
become way too easy really fast. By the time you’re able to perform 3 or more sets of
50 or more repetitions, they really become unnecessary. At this point, your time on direct
ab exercises would be better spent doing higher resistance exercises that stimulate your abdominal
muscles much more. For example, doing 3 sets of perfectly executed hanging leg raises will
strengthen your abs much more effectively than doing 3 sets of 100 sit ups.
Now here’s the answer to the second question: “Are sit ups good for losing belly fat?”
The short answer is no. Great fat burning takes place when you do exercises that cause
a huge metabolic response. This occurs the best with full body exercises such as (1)
clean and presses, and (2) arm swings, and with multi-joint exercises, such as (1) Deadlifts,
(2) Pull downs, and (3) Bench press. As a result, if your goal is to lose stomach fat
or get a sixpack, you really don’t need to waste much time with sit ups or crunches.
If you want to throw them in every once and while though, just for variety, that’s fine.
