First Lady Michelle Obama: Hi, how are you guys doing?
Children: Good.
First Lady Michelle Obama: Do you want to hear a story?
Children: Yes.
First Lady Michelle Obama: How about we read Twas the Night Before Christmas?
Kermit the Frog: Excuse me, pardon me, First Lady. Hi.
First Lady Michelle Obama: Hi. Hi, Kermit.
Kermit the Frog: Hi there.
First Lady Michelle Obama: You can call me Michelle.
Kermit the Frog: Oh, that's very sweet.
You know, that's very nice of you.
I have to call Miss Piggy, Your Majesty.
First Lady Michelle Obama: Oh, goodness.
(laughter)
Kermit the Frog: Yes, yes.
Hey, hey, do you mind, Michelle, if I read along, too?
First Lady Michelle Obama: Do you know this story?
Kermit the Frog: I do, it's one of my favorites of all time.
I particularly like the part about no creature was stirring.
First Lady Michelle Obama: Yeah.
Kermit the Frog: That never happens when you spend Christmas with
the Muppets.
First Lady Michelle Obama: I understand.
Kermit the Frog: Yep.
First Lady Michelle Obama: All right, well, I would love to have you join us.
Kermit the Frog: Oh, good, I'm excited.
First Lady Michelle Obama: It's exciting.
Are you guys okay with Kermit reading with us?
Children: Yes.
First Lady Michelle Obama: All right, they're good with it.
Are you ready to go?
Kermit the Frog: I am ready to go.
First Lady Michelle Obama: All right, well, I will start if you don't mind.
Kermit the Frog: Okay, sure.
First Lady Michelle Obama: Twas the night before Christmas When all through the house Not a
creature was stirring.
Kermit the Frog: Yep.
First Lady Michelle Obama: Not even a mouse.
Kermit the Frog: Uh-huh. Oh, my turn.
The stockings were hung By the chimney with care In hopes that
St. Nicholas Soon would be there.
First Lady Michelle Obama: The children were nestled All snug in their beds While visions
of sugarplums Danced in their heads.
Kermit the Frog: That's right.
And mama in her kerchief And I in my cap Had just settled down
For a long -- (yawn) -- winters nap.
First Lady Michelle Obama: Yeah. Hmm.
When out on the lawn There arose such a clatter I sprang from my
bed To see what was the matter.
Kermit the Frog: Away to the window I flew like a flash Tore open the shutters And
threw up the sash.
First Lady Michelle Obama: The moon on the breast Of the new fallen snow Gave a lustre
of midday To objects below.
Kermit the Frog: When what to my wandering eyes should appear But a miniature
sleigh And eight tiny reindeer.
First Lady Michelle Obama: With a little old driver So lively and quick I knew in a
moment It must be St. Nick.
Kermit the Frog: Yes, yes.
More rapid than eagles His coursers they came And he
whistled and shouted And he called them by name.
First Lady Michelle Obama: Now Dasher Now Dancer Now Prancer And Vixen On Comet
On Cupid On Donder And Blitzen.
Kermit the Frog: To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall Now dash-away
Dash-away Dash-away all!
First Lady Michelle Obama: As the dry leaves before the Wild hurricane fly When they
meet with an obstacle Mount to the sky.
Kermit the Frog: Whoosh!
First Lady Michelle Obama: Whoosh!
Kermit the Frog: So up to the housetop the coursers they flew With a
sleigh full of toys And St. Nicholas, too.
First Lady Michelle Obama: And then in a twinkling I heard on the roof The prancing and
pawing Of each little hoof.
Kermit the Frog: As I drew in my head And was turning around Down the chimney
St. Nicholas came with a bound.
First Lady Michelle Obama: He was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot And his
clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
Kermit the Frog: A bundle of toys he had flung on his back And he looked like a
peddler Just opening his sack.
First Lady Michelle Obama: His eyes how they twinkled His dimples how merry His cheeks
were like roses His nose like a cherry.
Kermit the Frog: His drawl little mouth was drawn up in a bow And the beard on his
chin Was as white as the snow.
First Lady Michelle Obama: The stump of his pipe He held tight in his teeth And the
smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath.
Kermit the Frog: He had a broad face And a little round belly That shook when he
laughed Like a bowl full of jelly.
First Lady Michelle Obama: He was chubby and plump A right jolly old elf And I laughed when
I saw him In spite of myself.
Kermit the Frog: And a wink of his eye and a twist of his head Soon gave me
to know I had nothing to dread.
First Lady Michelle Obama: He spoke not a word But went straight to his work And filled
all the stockings Then turned with a jerk.
Kermit the Frog: And laying his finger aside of his nose And giving a nod Up the
chimney he rose.
First Lady Michelle Obama: He sprang to his sleigh To his team gave a whistle And away
they all flew Like the down of a thistle.
Kermit the Frog: But I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight --
Together: Merry Christmas to all And to all a goodnight!
First Lady Michelle Obama: Well done.
Kermit the Frog: Very nice. Very nice.
First Lady Michelle Obama: Thank you, Kermit.
Kermit the Frog: Oh, I thank you, Michelle.
And Merry Christmas.
First Lady Michelle Obama: Merry Christmas, happy holidays!
Kermit the Frog: Thank you. Merry Christmas, kids!
First Lady Michelle Obama: Say Merry Christmas.
Children: Merry Christmas!
First Lady Michelle Obama: Merry Christmas!
