Good afternoon and welcome to the fourth annual LMP National Competition Awards luncheon.
I'm Faye Gayes, I'm vice president of state relations and educational programs for
the Educational Institute.
The idea for the event is simple, it's supposed to be fun
supposed to challenge your skills, supposed to get great networking opportunities,
how many of you have made new friends here, made new friends?
Traded emails.
Hey that's great! That's what it's all about! Because you never know when you're going to
run into that person next to you again,
and your paths will cross.
Because this moment is also a triumph for you,
and one of many to come,
it's an honor just to compete
or to be nominated.
I'm Brittany Wilhelm,
I'm from North Myrtle Beach High School, South Carolina.
My name is Odin Porras,

It's a great competition, it's a great way to showcase the students who really have
worked hard and who really prepare for this event.
worked hard and who really prepare for this event.
I think this this competition
has taught the students
being able to show their creativity
their knowledge
their professionalism all the things they're taught basically, in class or
in the rotations that they do at hotels.
Oh I think the competition is vitally important to the program,
and to get the kids prepared for the real industry.
I think the competition is excellent, I think Faye Gayes and her folks
have done a great job of putting together
have done a great job of putting together
a national competition that's worthy of
the competitive spirit of all the folks that we have here.
Well you know I've been here
two or three years,
I've watched the students get better and better.
It seems like every year they're
more polished
and more practiced
they know what they're doing.
In AH&LA obviously on the lodging side
one of our largest challenges
is finding qualified people.
is finding qualified people.
That come into our profession,
that help us operate our hotels.
I think we are
seeing the future leaders of the hospitality industry right here today,
and it couldn't be brighter.
Johnson & Wales is definitely very committed to the Lodging Management Program,
Johnson & Wales is definitely very committed to the Lodging Management Program,
once a student completes the program, we know how beneficial it is
for them to be successful with us, and we award a $1,000 scholarship
that's renewable for all four years while they're at the university.
As well as at these competitions at the state level and at the national level
we award scholarships because we know students gain these skills to be successful
in our courses that we teach at the university, so it's a great fit and win for us.

I'm amazed, they seem so maturre in hospitality to be a high school students.
I'm amazed, they seem so mature in hospitality to be a high school students.
And clearly this is the way to
build the pool of people we need that we're going to be so short of in this industry.
build the pool of people we need that we're going to be so short of in this industry.
Obviously this is the the youth, this is the future of the hotel industry,
I'm betting a pretty important part of the hotel industry.
I'm betting a pretty important part of the hotel industry.
It's a good combination for us, it's a good way for us to give back to the industry.
It's a good combination for us, it's a good way for us to give back to the industry.
You know our support
of the education side is key in helping to get new employees
into the industry and really help fill the gaps throughout America in terms of
the expansion and growth in hotel companies are seeing right now.
They ought to get onboard,
very plain and simple
this is the future.
It's phenomenal!
When we've taken a look at what the situation is in our industry and the shortage of
qualified workers
and what these students know
we really need industry to get involved and I think they just don't realize how
intense this program is and that the kids want to be in the industry and we have a
great resource with our high school program.
Actually I got a trip to Johnson & Wales University and I'm going to be doing international marketing
specifically targeted at hotels and motels and large resorts.
I plan to be an entrepreneur, I plan to start my own chain of hotels
and get my own brand name out hopefully soon.
I plan to attend FIU and major in hospitality and management.
It's a way of life in Miami, you know,
it's a booming industry in Miami, the hospitality industry
and we live all around it, we see tourists all day
and maybe
thirty seven cents of every
tax dollar is paid by a tourist.
So you know we kinda have to give back to them
and give them service, they love it!
That's why they keep coming back. We love it!
I actually want to become a CPA for major hotels and casinos.
I actually want to become a CPA for major hotels and casinos.
I actually like the
banquet and catering of the hotel
so maybe I want to manage something
around in that area. That's what I'm interested in.
In the Fall I'll be heading to Coastal Carolina University
in Myrtle Beach
for travel and tourism management.
And i plan on going right into the field of event planning. Team!
He needs to let everyone know
all of the tour companies
and guests and everyone in the area that property is under new management
and that
there being major changes being made.
Good morning! How are you? Nice to meet you Michael!
To wrap up...
some of the things he could've done was just hire those temp agencies because
they do have the skills
although your hotel may have different standards
but that's all adjustable
to accommodate you.
And what they have to do is come in and identify ten things that are wrong with the room.
Some examples are that there are no pillow cases on the pillows.
So if you look at the bedspread you see...

There's no soap in the bathroom.
There's water in the sink.
The bath mat's in the tub.
There's a towel hanging behind the door. Things that should've been cleaned up

And the first place overall winner award goes to:
Team number five from Mountainview Academy, New Hampshire.
And this is the 2nd year in a row for them.
Congratulations to Mountain View Academy and all our overall winners.
Congratulations to Mountain View Academy and to all our overall winners.
Congratulations again to all the teams!
And it's so exciting, I get goosebumps
when I see the kids and how happy they are and excited they are
for all the work they put into it and and what they've achieved.
You can't put into words what that means.
These kids want to be in our industry and to see them succeed is unbelievable.
And that Knowledge Bowl,
with those kids just rattling off the answers i'm sure there's GM's that couldn't
answer the questions they
able to answer so we're excited about it we're looking forward to next
year and we hope that we have more sponsors a more states involved.
They ought to get onboard, very plain and simple.
This is the future.

Hooray!
