(on cam) mcu The at large seat left vacant when Rita Sweet
Bellitto accepted a city council position is one step closer to being filled.
(vo) The school board held a public hearing for
the position. There were 15 eligible applicants 10 of whom presented their interest in the
position.
Dissolve to board The board has narrowed their decision down
to 5 candidates who will have closed door interviews. The school board is expected to
make a final decision on the position by the end of the month.
(on cam) mcu The appointed candidate will serve through
December of this year, at which point the position will be open to a public election.
(on cam) mcu In January of 2010, the city council approved
Interfacility Traffic Area and Vicinity Master Plan study. The study will focus on the land
under the flight corridor between NAS Oceana and the Fentress Airfield. And the city is
looking for your input.
(vo) A public meeting will be held on March 11
at 6 p.m. for citizens who have a stake in that area. Citizens will be able to provide
input that could help define a vision for the future of the I-T-A and the surrounding
land. The meeting will be held in building 19 at the municipal center… and again, the
date is March 11 at 6 p.m.
(on cam) ots-sr If you’re in the market for a new furry
friend, then the Virginia Beach animal control shelter may have just the one for you… and
you can take peace of mind in knowing that now any animal adopted from the shelter will
already be protected against rabies and licensed by the city.
(Board) BEGINNING MARCH 15TH…THE CITY WILL REQUIRE
ANY PET ADOPTED FROM THE SHELTER TO BE LICENSED. THE NEW REQUIREMENT DOES ADD ADDITIONAL FEES
TO THE ADOPTION BUT…. LICENSING YOUR PET S INCREASES THE CHANCES OF THEM BEING REUNITED
WITH THEIR FAMILY IN THE EVENT OF BEING LOST.

(on cam) ots-sr For Many, adopted pets become a major part
of our lifestyle. in fact over 71 million households in the United States own at least
one pet…and as Access Reporter stephanie sutton shows us…responsible pet ownership
means more than just adoring your pet.
(Reporter On-Cam) 1:04 it’s easy to fall in love with our furry
friends but ensuring they have a happy and healthy life takes a lot more effort.
SOT 18:56-19:11 Debora Gregory, Animal Control Officer II
“Companion animals rely on their owners for all their needs, they’re not wild animals.
They need the owner to provide them with their food, shelter, and water and when you decided
to get a pet you’re making a commitment for the rest of its life.”
4:30 That’s why animal control wants to make
sure you’re aware of the laws surrounding pet ownership.
SOT 10:39-10:53 Debora Gregory, Animal Control Officer II
“With companion animals, pet owners are required to practice animal husbandry and
that includes shelter, food, and water, the production of the animal and transportation
of the animal.”
5:08 Also important…
NATS 9:59-10:02(Vet examining dog) “I’m going to feel your little abdomen.”
proper Veterinarian care and disease prevention.
SOT 1:24-1:35 Leslie Nelson, Veterinarian
“Vaccinations-the biggest thing is rabies, that’s required by law! For dogs there is
the K-9 distemper which also includes the Parvo Virus.”
5:26 City law also states that you must provide
adequate shelter, you are only allowed to own four dogs at a time, and dogs must be
leashed when walking them. Also, you can chain your dog outside for no more than three hours
at a time and your pet must have a city license.
NATS (Dumping food in bowl)
6:36 And of course your pet must always have adequate
food and water.
SOT 6:18-6:29(cover with dog eating) Leslie Nelson, Veterinarian
“The best thing is to feed them a balanced, commercially prepared diet.”
(Reporter On-Cam)3:49 By the time your dog or cat is four months
old he’s required to have a rabies shot and a city license…it’s the law! Reporting
for VBTV…I’m stephanie sutton.
(on cam) ots-sr License applications for your pet are available
online at v-b gov dot com slash animal control.

Beach, I’m Lindy Fay… How many years has it been since you first
got your driver’s license…10, 20, maybe even 30 years? All that experience adds up
to something, but If it’s been awhile, since you last reviewed the rules of the road, then
the AARP has just the course to bring you up to date.
Tune up your driving skills and get a quick refresher course on driver safety during the
AARP Driver Safety Program. The program is geared for seniors age 50 and older, but is
open to all drivers. The two day course runs from 9am to 1pm on March 25th and 26th at
the Princess Anne Recreation Center. The course is 12 dollars for AARP members and 14 for

(on cam) MCU Well, it’s a little known service that for
many could save money for many, while providing a little relief for those involved… its
Respite Care for the Eldery… a program that provides assistance by offering an adult sitter
for families in need.
(sot) what it is...Nancy Allan Respite Care Coordinator, Virginia Beach
4:31:35 – 4;31:44 they go out as needed to families that sign up for the program and
they substitute for a family member so the family caregiver can get out of the house.
(dissolve to board) The program can help reduce the stress associated
with providing care to an impaired adult by providing a break from the responsibilities
of caring for a family member. And getting service is as easy as a phone call to 385-4135
(on cam) And if you’re not in need of service but
think you might be interested in helping an older adult, then here’s an opportunity
for you…
(dissolve to board The respite care program is offering a 5 day
training session beginning on March 29. The day runs from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Caregivers
are paid for their services and can work as much or as little as they choose. Those interested
must complete an application, a background check and a face-to-face interview. Call the
senior adult services division at 385-4135 for more information.
(on cam) tos-sr And if you’re not interested in going to
someone else’s home to care for them, have you considered a more long-term option? For
many adults needing care, group homes and residential living facilities used to be the
most common way to go through life… but as access reporter Robert Patterson shows
us, dependent adults can make a happy addition to a family atmosphere.
(REPORTER ON CAM) AV367308 08/08/08 FOSTER CARE, IT’S GENERALLY A TERM TIED
TO CHILDREN PUT IN A HOME BECAUSE THEIR PARENTS ARE UNABLE TO CARE FOR THEM. BUT WHAT HAPPENS
WHEN THE PERSON IN NEED IS AN ADULT? WELL, IN VIRGINIA BEACH, THERE’S A PROGRAM TO
HELP SERVE JUST THIS KIND OF POPULATION.
(SOT) 1:47 – 2:05 MARIE GUSTAFSON, SOCIAL WORKER, HUMAN SERVICES
“THE ADULT FOSTER CARE PROGRAM IS AN ALTERNATIVE PROGRAM TO KEEP PEOPLE FROM LIVING IN RESIDENTIAL
PLACEMENTS WHO WOULD PREFER TO LIVE IN THE COMMUNITY. IT’S DESIGNED FOR INDIVIDUALS
WHO JUST NEED SOME ASSISTANCE TO MAINTAIN THEMSELVES AT HOME”
IN SHORT, ADULT FOSTER CARE OFFERS A COMFORTABLE LIVING ARRANGEMENT FOR THOSE UNABLE TO COMPLETELY
FEND FOR THEMSELVES.
(SOT) 3:06 – 3:21 MARIE “THE ADULTS IN THE FOSTER CARE PROGRAM GENERALLY
NEED ASSISTANCE WITH DAY TO DAY TASKS OF LIVING SUCH AS MEAL PREPARATION, SHOPPING, AND GETTING
TO APPOINTMENTS ON TIME.
SOME OF THESE ADULTS ARE FORMER FOSTER CARE CHILDREN, AND MANY DON’T HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER
WHO IS ABLE TO TAKE CARE OF THEM. AS A RESULT, THE ADULT FOSTER CARE PROGRAM IS TURNING TO
THE COMMUNITY FOR HELP.
(SOT) 4:56 – 5:16 MARIE “WHAT HUMAN SERVICES IS LOOKING FOR IS FOR
PROVIDERS TO STEP UP AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE COMMUNITY BY TAKING ADULTS INTO THEIR
HOME AND INCLUDING THEM AS PART OF THEIR FAMILY,
(SOT) DARNELL & JEAN THOROUGHGOOD, ADULT FOSTER CARE PROVIDERS
T-1 4:41 – 5:00 “WE DO OUR FAMILY ACTIVITIES WITH FAMILY REUNIONS AND THINGS ANS WE MAKE
THEM FEEL A PART OF THE FAMILY AND INTRODUCE THEM TO THE FAMILY AND WE LET THE FAMILY KNOW
THEY A PART O THE FAMILY AND IT HAS WORKED OUT SO WELL!
(REPORTER ON CAM) AND OF COURSE, ADULT CARE PROVIDERS ARE NOT
LEFT TO THEIR OWN DEVICES…THEY RECEIVE TRAINING, REGULAR UPDATES, AND PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT
IS AVAILABLE IF THE NEED SHOULD ARISE.
SOT) THOROUGHGOOD 9:24 – 9:32 TAPE 1 THERE IS NOT A WEEK THAT GOES BY THAT WE ARE
NOT IN COMMUNICATION WITH THE HUMAN SERVICES.
FINANCIAL COMPENSATION IS ALSO INCLUDED, BUT IT’S THE SENSE OF FULFILLMENT AND ACCOMPLISHMENT
THAT IS THE REAL REWARD FOR THOSE WHO CHOOSE TO OPEN THEIR HOMES TO OTHERS IN NEED.
(SOT ) COLVIN BRADDY, ADULT FOSTER CARE PROVIDER 21:54 – 22:21 “THERE WAS SOME KIND OF
EMERGENCY IN HIS FAMILY, I’M NOT SURE WHAT BUT THEY NEEDED TO FIND A PLACE FOR HIM QUICKLY
AND I HAD JUST BECOME A FOSTER PARENT SO I HAD AN OPENING AND THEY PLACED HIM WITH ME
AND IT WAS THE BEST THING THAT EVER COULD HAVE HAPPENED! RICKY’S A VERY NICE GUY TO
WORK WITH.
(SOT) SHANE ???, FOSTER CARE ADULT 20:30 – 20:53 “I FEEL I HAVE A LOT MORE
SELF ESTEEM, AND ALSO A LOT OF OTHER THINGS, SUCH AS, “I’M PROUD OF WHAT I DO”
(REPORTER CLOSE) SOME ADULTS MAY NEED ONLY TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE
UNTIL THEY LEARN TO LIVE INDEPENDENTLY, OTHERS MAY NEED LONG TERM CARE. EITHER WAY, THE DEPARTMENT
OF HUMAN SERVICES IS OFFERING YOU A CHANCE TO OPEN YOUR HEARTS AND YOUR HOME TO A NEEDY
ADULT. REPORTING FOR VBTV, I’M ROBERT PATTERSON.

(vo) It’s that time of the year again… the
annual cherry blossom festival will

in
full bloom at Red Wing Park! Kick off the spring season with a celebration of peace
and good will. The festival also honors the relationship between the city of Virginia

p.m. on Saturday march 27. Log on to VBGov dot com slash parks for more information.
(on cam) mcu Open up any cookbook and you’ll see that
it takes more than one ingredient to make a great recipe, the same holds true for students….it
takes a village to raise a child. And as you’ll see in this next story; the city, school division
and community came together to create their own recipe for success.
NATS 17:52-18:00 “You got heads? Ready? Yeah. All right, heads got the ball.”
Welcome to the Open Gym Project at Bayside Middle School….
SOT 5:49-6:02 Sandra Smith-Jones, VBCPS School Board Member
“This is the recreation program that we have in collaboration with the churches, schools
and city of Virginia Beach department of recreations, so the students and families in the Western
Bayside area can come out and have a good time together.”
From basketball tournaments…
NATS 11:52-11:57 “Stepping with the ladies, aha…”
To dance competitions….kids from the bayside area can participate in some good, clean fun
every weekend.
SOT 6:18-6:25 Sandra Smith-Jones, VBCPS School Board Member
“This will continue on throughout the year and we’ll have them in on Fridays from 6
– 9:30 and Saturdays from 12 – 4.”
The whole community came together to offer this partnership in the hopes of instilling
neighborhood pride and mentorships.
SOT 1:24-1:36 Michael Daniels, Pastor, Enoch Baptist Church
“To make sure gangs no longer become the only viable alternatives, that they see some
positive things, that they see some positive role models so they can make a difference
in themselves and in their own community.”
SOT 2:51-2:57 Raven Worlds, Community Member “I think it’s very productive for the
kids in the community because it’s keeping them off the streets.”
(VO) The rec program is held at Bayside Middle
school and is free and open to the public every Friday night and Saturday afternoon
from now until the end of the school year.
(on cam) OTS When Virginia Beach high school students enroll
in the technology programs at the advanced technology center they know they’re going
to get some hands on experience. But for some students, that experience means stepping beyond
their role in the classroom to do paid work for local companies…
(sot about grant) Ann Marie Garvey, Asst. Director of Student Programs & Business Development
@ ATC Tape 2 6:57 – 7:14 Students that are in
these classes are eligible to participate in a work-based experience related t the field
they’re in. Students are actually screened by their instructors based on technical skills,
and work place readiness skills…
And after an interview process, 14 students were selected to put their skills to good
use and gain experience in what it’s like to be in the working world…
(sot) Joseph Ashe ATC Student Tape 1 “4:30 – 4:46 “I was scared at
first. Ti’s not like getting a normal grade in school, that’s for sure. You can’t
just get extra credit and make it up, you need to get it done the first time and it
needs to be correct.
Students modeled buildings, created 3-d models and plotted maps. And as they honed their
skills, places like the military aviation museum in Virginia Beach saw a new dimension
added to their business…
(sot)David Hunt, Director, Military Aviation Museum
Tape 1 20:33- 20:54 I think it’s going to help us tremendously because the students
are putting the 5 new buildings that aren’t built yet on the virtual tour, so it’ll
give the visitors who come in a chance to see what we’ll have in the next 6 months,
18 months…
(vo) And thanks to a fifteen thousand dollar grant
from the local workforce development board, Opportunity Inc, the students will be paid
to broaden their horizons…
(sot)Ann Marie Tape 2 8:48 – 9:07 “certainly our students are thinking about a career in
the engineering field, but we have students who work for example with the city of Virginia
Beach public works, well, they really hadn’t thought of civil engineering or GIS systems
in the dimension that they hadn’t had to with the city of Virginia Beach.
And its experiences like this that help open up new avenues for the future…
3:02 – 3:13 Tape 1 I decided to change my minor in college to
civil engineering so I’ll major in architecture and minor in civil engineering. So if things
don’t work out, I’ll be able to do something that I actually like instead of just what
happened to come up.
(on cam) ots-sr Many Virginia Beach students enrolled in programs
at the advanced technology center receive industry certification and are work force
ready when they leave high school.
(on cam) ots Quick, what is two hundred thousand minus
ninety eight thousand eight hundred sixty six? Calculate the answer to that and you’ll
learn how many math problems the students at Windsor Woods Elementary solved on March
3rd… a-k-a world maths day!
(sot Sonya Benshoff, 4th Grade Teacher, Windsor Woods Elementary
04;11:47;0 Today the students are participating in world math day an event that started in
2007 that allows students to compete against other students all over the world in age appropriate
basic math computation facts.
The Windsor woods elementary students linked up with others online to compete in 60 second
math competitions. Students earned points for each correct answer… but it was more
than just solving problems, there was a fun factor too!
04:13:59 Kids love it, anytime you can tie technology into learning they forget that
they’re learning and they’re having fun and mastering math at the same time, they
enjoy the competitive nature of it and who they’’re competing against around the
world.
And that kind of interaction equals better preparation for a global workforce…
(sot from Drummond Ball, Principal, Windsor Woods Elementary
4:2702: the students are competing against boys and girls around the world and what this
does is shows examples of the shrinking world our students are going to be competing against
boys and girls around the world for jobs, and this is part of getting them used to working
with others and getting them used to working globally. 4:27:26:00
More than a million students worldwide participated in math day…
(sot from student)Emily Bullock 4th grader 4:19:11 I think it was a really cool experience,
to play with 10s of thousands of people around the world…
And the final sum of all correct math problems solved on world math day??? More than five
hundred and twenty five million.
In all, the students at Windsor Woods elementary answered more than one hundred one thousand
math problems in one day with an accuracy rate of 93 percent.
(ON CAM) MCU And with that, we’ve come to the end of
our show. But if you’ve missed something or would like to see it again, you can view
this program online… log on to vbgov.com/e-stream… then find and click on access Virginia Beach.
