ABOARD THE NAVY'S ONLY FULL-TIME FORWARD DEPLOYED CARRIER, ADMIRAL SAMUEL LOCKLEAR ADDRESSED
HIS BIGGEST AUDIENCE SINCE BECOMING THE NEW COMMANDER OF U.S. PACIFIC COMMAND. A SEA OF
NAVY WORKING UNIFORMS ASSEMBLED IN THE HANGAR BAY OF USS GEORGE WASHINGTON.
"SO LET ME TELL YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHY YOU'RE IMPORTANT, AND WHY THIS SHIP AND THESE
SHIPS HERE ARE IMPORTANT."
MORE THAN 4,000 SAILORS FROM GEORGE WASHINGTON, NAVAL FORCES JAPAN AND FLEET ACTIVITIES YOKOSUKA
GATHERED TO HEAR ADMIRAL LOCKLEAR DISCUSS WHAT HE CONSIDERS THE MOST CRITICAL NAVAL
ISSUES IN THE WESTERN PACIFIC AND RIGHT NOW, THAT'S NORTH KOREA.
"IF THEY GO FORWARD WITH THIS MISSILE LAUNCH, WHICH THEY'RE CALLING A SATELLITE LAUNCH BUT
THE REAL ISSUE IS MISSILE TECHNOLOGY, THEY WILL BE PURSUING WHAT APPEARS TO BE A LONGER
RANGE CAPABLE MISSILE."
THE ALL HANDS CALL TURNED TOWN HALL AS THE ADMIRAL ALLOWED SAILORS TO TAKE TO THE MIC
AND ASK QUESTIONS ON TOPICS THAT WERE OF IMPORTANCE. OTHERS ASKED ABOUT HAZING, AND RETIREMENT
BENEFITS WHILE THE TOPIC OF PERFORM-TO-SERVE WAS ALSO DISCUSSED. FOR THOSE ON HAND, HEARING
DIRECTLY FOR PACOM ABOUT WHAT CONCERNS THEM, GAVE MANY A FEELING THAT THEIR OPINION MATTERS,
ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP.
"I THINK THAT PROBABLY MADE A LOT OF PEOPLE FEEL PRETTY GOOD ABOUT BEING IN THE NAVY,
BEING OUT IN THE PACIFIC, BECAUSE IT MEANS OUR BOSSES BOSSES BOSS ACTUALLY CARES ABOUT
US AND WHAT WE THINK, YA KNOW?"
"I THOUGHT IT WAS EXTRAORDINARY. IT WAS JUST SUCH AN HONOR JUST TO BE HERE JUST TO WITNESS
SOMETHING LIKE THAT FROM EVERYONE COMING ON BOARD. I'M BRAND NEW HERE SO JUST FOR ME TO
SEE ANYTHING LIKE THAT WAS JUST OVER THE TOP I WAS JUST ECSTATIC ABOUT IT."
IN ADDITION TO VISITING SAILORS IN YOKOSUKA, ADMIRAL LOCKLEAR ALSO VISITED TROOPS ASSIGNED
TO U.S. FORCES JAPAN NEAR TOKYO. ONBOARD GEORGE WASHINGTON, I'M PETTY OFFICER PETER BURGHART.
