>> >>DWANE: TERRIFIED CHILDREN ARE EVACUATED FROM A CONNECTICUT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AFTER
A MASS SHOOTING. I'M DWANE BROWN.
TONIGHT ON KPBS EVENING EDITION, WE HAVE ALL THE LATEST INFORMATION ABOUT THE SHOOTING.
>> >>PEGGY: AND I'M PEGGY PICO. WE'LL ALSO HAVE TIPS ON HOW TO COPE WITH TODAY'S
TRAGEDY AND WE'LL TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM PROFILES OF MASS MURDERS.
KPBS EVENING EDITION STARTS NOW. CAPTIONS PROVIDED BY ECAPTIONS.
>> >>: THERE'S NO WORDS THATハ THERE'S NO WORDS THAT I CAN COME UP WITH THAT WOULD EVEN
COME CLOSE TO DESCRIBING THE SHEER TERROR OF HEARING THAT YOUR SON IS IN A PLACEハ
OR YOUR CHILD IS IN A PLACE WHERE THERE'S BEEN VIOLENCE.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE DETAILS OF THAT VIOLENCE, YOU DON'T KNOW THE CONDITION OF YOUR CHILD,
AND YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING TO IMMEDIATELY HELP THEM OR PROTECT THEM.
THAT IS A POWERLESS AND TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE. >> >>DWANE: ONE FATHER DESCRIBES HIS PERSONAL
TERROR WHILE ANOTHER EXPRESSES THE NATION'S GRIEF.
>> >>: THE MAJORITY OF THOSE WHO DIED TODAY WERE CHILDREN.
BEAUTIFUL LITTLE KIDS BETWEEN THE AGES OF FIVE AND TEN YEARS OLD.
>> >>DWANE: WITH TEARS IN HIS EYES PRESIDENT OBAMA DECLARES OUR HEARTS ARE BROKEN IN THE
WACK OF A MASS SHOOTING IN SUBURB N CONNECTICUT. POLICE SAY 26 PEOPLE WERE KILLED THIS MORNING
WHEN A MAN OPENED FIRE AT SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
THE GUNMAN TOOK HIS OWN LIFE. POLICE SAY THERE WAS ONE OTHER VICTIM AT ANOTHER
SCENE. THEY HAVEN'T O FISH OFFICIALLY RELEASED MANY
DETAILS ABOUT THE SHOOTING BUT NPR SAYS IT'S CONFIRMED THE SHOOTING WAS 20 YEAR OLD ADAM
LANZA. JOEL, WHAT ARE WE HEARING TONIGHT FROM POLICE THERE?
>> >>: LOCAL OFFICIALS ARE BEING MORE CAUTIOUS AT THIS HOUR.
THEY JUST DON'T WANT TO RELEASE THE NAME OF THE SHOOTER OR ANY OF THE OTHER VICTIMS UNTIL
THEY HAVEハ UNTIL THEY ARE CERTAIN THEY GOT THE IDENTIFICATIONS CORRECT.
THEY SAY THEY HAVE PRELIMINARY IDENTIFICATION FOR ALL OF THE VICTIMS AND HAVE CONTACTED
ALL OF THE FAMILIES AT THIS POINT. THEY'VE DESCRIBED GENERALLY WHAT HAPPENED
AROUND 9:30ハA.M. THIS MORNING, THE SHOOTER ENTERED THE SCHOOL, IN NEWTOWN CONNECTICUT
AND OPENED FIRE IN POSSIBLY SEVERAL ROOMS ACROSS ONE AREA OF THE SCHOOL T.THEY HAVEN'T
SAID A WHOLE LOT MORE THAN THAT. WE ARE EXPECTING CONFIRMATION THE VICTIMS
NAMES AS WELL AS MORE DETAILS ABOUT THIS HORRIFIC INCIDENT AT A PRESS BRIEFING TOMORROW MORNING.
>> >>DWANE: MANY OF THESE VICTIMS ARE BELIEVED TO BE BETWEEN 5 AND 10 YEARS OLD.
WHAT KINDS OF REACTIONS ARE YOU GET FROM PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY THERE?
>> >>: PEOPLE ARE HORRIFIED, THEY'RE NUMB, I THINK STILL LARGELY IN SHOCK.
THIS IS A RELATIVELY WELL TO DO PART OF A RELATIVELY WELL TO DO STATE.
IT'S A WOODSY, REMOTE COMMUNITY, VERY FAR AWAY FROM NEW YORK CITY WHICH IS ONLY AN HOUR
AND A HALF AWAY. IT MIGHT AS WELL BE A WORLD AWAY.
THIS FEELS LIKE A VERY SAFE COMMUNITY, UNTIL THIS MORNING Y.THINK PEOPLE ARE STILL SHOCKED,
HORRIFIED AND COMING TO TERMS WITH ONE OF THE WORST SHOOTING DEATHS INハ ONE OF THE
WORST SCHOOL SHOOTING SPREES IN U.S. HISTORY, LET ALONE THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT.
>> >>DWANE: NPR REPORTER JOEL FROM NEWTOWN CONNECTICUT WITH THE LATEST.
HERE IN SAN DIEGO, SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE WORKING TO REASSURE PARENTS AFTER THE SHOOTING.
OF COURSE SAN DIEGO UNIFIED SUPERINTENDENT BILL KOBA SENT AN E MAIL TO THE FAMILIES:
CARLSBAD SCHOOLS IN THE NORTH COUNTY TOOK AN EXTRA STEP TODAY ASKING POLICE TO INCREASE
PATROLS AROUND CAMPUSES. THE DISTRICT SAYS IT'S A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE ON ITS WEBSITE
TONIGHT SUPERINTENDENT SUZETTE LOVELY WRITES: THE CARLSBAD DISTRICT HAS EXPERIENCE WITH SCHOOL
SHOOTINGS. A GUNMAN WOUNDED TWO GIRL OPS IT PLAY GROUND
OF KELLY ELEMENTARY AND SAN DIEGO COUNTY HAS SEEN ITS SHARE OF DEADLY SHOOTING RAMPAGES,
TWO SKILLED AT SANTANA HIGH SCHOOL IN 2001, THREE PROFESSOR SHOT TO DEATH AT SAN DIEGO
STATE UNIVERSITY IN 1996, A 1993 SHOOTING AT AN EL CAJON GYM LEFT FOUR PEOPLE DEAD,
21 PEOPLE DIED AT A SHOOTING AT MCDONALD'S IN SAN YSIDRO IN 1984, AND FIVE OF THOSE VICTIMS
WERE CHILDREN. IN 1979, BRENDA SPENCER KILLED TWO PEOPLE
AND WOUNDED NINE OTHERS. SHE TOLD POLICE BACK THEN SHE DID IT BECAUSE
SHE DIDN'T LIKE MONDAYS. MANY QUESTIONS REMAIN ABOUT THE MASS SHOOTING
TODAY INCLUDING HOW TO TALK WITH YOUR CHILD ABOUT IT.
PEGGY PICO HAS SOME INSIGHT. >> >>PEGGY: THE DONE TREA IS IN MOURNING OVER
THE HORRIFIC KILLINGS. HERE'S WHAT PRESIDENT OBAMA SAID ABOUT IT
EARLIER TODAY. >> >>: AS A COUNTRY WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH THIS
TOO MANY TIMES. WHETHER IT'S AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN NEWTOWN
OR A SHOPPING MALL IN OREGON, OR A TEMPLE IN WISCONSIN OR A MOVIE THEATER IN AURORA
OR A STREET CORNER IN CHICAGO, THESE NEIGHBORHOODS ARE OUR NEIGHBORHOODS AND THESE CHILDREN ARE
OUR CHILDREN. WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO COME TOGETHER AND TAKE
MEANINGFUL ACTION TO PREVENT MORE TRAGEDIES LIKE THIS REGARDLESS OF THE POLITICS.
>> >>PEGGY: IT'S DIFFICULT FOR ALL OF US. JOINING ME NOW TO TALK ABOUT WAYS OF FER TO
COPE WITH FEELINGS OF SADNESS, FEAR, AND CONFUSION ABOUT ONE O THE WORST SCHOOL SHOOTINGS IN
SAN DIEGO HISTORY, IS WENDY PATRICK. AND DAVID PETERS.
THANK YOU BOTH FOR JOINING US ON THIS VERY SAD DAY.
DAVID, ALL OF THISハ OBVIOUSLY TRAUMATIZED BY THIS, BUT YOU VERY PERSONALLY RECENTLY
ONE OF YOUR CLOSE FRIENDS DIED IN THE OREGON SHOOTINGS JUST TWO DAYS AGO.
HOW ARE YOU COPING WITH THAT? >> >>: WELL, WITH THE USUAL WAY.
SHARING WITH FRIENDS, SHARING WITH OLD HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDS THAT CINDY YOU'LL WAS KILLED.
SHE WAS A CLOSE HIGH SCHOOL FRIEND. YOU SHARE WITH THOSE HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDS WHO
KNOW, OR WHOEVER KNOWS THE PERSON WHO'S DECEASED, TALK, SHARE, CRY TOGETHER, TELL STORIES, AND
THEN REMEMBER TO BE ALIVE. REMEMBER TO GET EXERCISE, TO GET, TO HUG CHILDREN,
AND TO DO THE THINGS THAT GIVE US LIFE. IT'S IMPORTANT TO MOURN THE DEAD, I ALWAYS
TELL MY CLIENTS. GRIEVE PURPOSEFULLY, AND THEN STOP GRIEVING
AND MOVE FORWARD AND ENJOY THE DAY OR ENJOY WHAT YOU CAN, AND THEN TAKE ANOTHER TIME LATER
TO GRIEVE AGAIN. IT COULD TAKE WEEKS OR MONTHS.
>> >>PEGGY: IT WAS ONLY TWO DAYS AGO THAT THIS HAPPENED AND NOW THIS.
CHILDREN, HOW DO PARENTS TALK TO THEIR CHILDREN ABOUT WHAT'S HAPPENING?
>> >>: THIS IS A REAL IMPORTANT QUESTION Y.WOULD SAY TO PARENTS WHO HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN WHO
DON'T KNOW YET WHAT'S GOING ON, TO DON'T TELL THEM.
YOU KNOW, THE SMALLER THE CHILD, THE MORE YOU WANT TO SHIELD THEM FROM THIS.
SO SOME CHILDREN WILL BE COMING HOME FROM SCHOOL KNOWING ABOUT THIS.
THEY WILL ALL HAVE HEARD. THE IMPORTANT THING IS TO FIND OUT WHAW THEY
KNOW FIRST. WHAT DID YOU HEAR, WHAT DID YOU SEE, LET THEM
TELL THEIR STORY. YOU CAN CONFIRM WHAT'S TRUE, AND DISCONFIRM
WHAT'S NOT TRUE. THEN THE RULE OF THUMB IS YOU ONLY TELL THE
CHILDREN AS MUCH AS THEY ARE CAPABLE OF UNDERSTANDING. >> >>PEGGY: AGE SPECIFIC.
>> >>: IT'S VERY IMPORTANT. WE WANT TO BE LEADERS IN OUR HOMES.
IT'S NOTハ IT'S VERY IMPORTANT FOR US TO BE STRONG.
WE DON'T WANT OUR CHILDREN SMALL CHILDREN WATCHING TV RIGHT NOW IF IT'S THE NEWS.
WE WON'T WANT OUR CHILDREN SEEING US BREAK DOWN IF WE'RE HAVING OUR MOMENT OF TRULY BREAKING
DOWN CRYING WITH FRIENDS OR WHATEVER. THIS IS A TIME FOR THE CHILDREN TO EXPERIENCE
US AS CONFIDENT. THEN IF THEY WANT TO GRIEVE, IF THEY'VE SEEN
SOMETHING OB TV, AND THEY'RE SCARED, IT'S IMPORT TONIGHT TALK WITH THEM.
REASSURE THEM THEY'RE SAFE. YOU CAN HONESTLY REASSURE THEM THEY'RE SAFE
BECAUSE FOR THE MOST PART STATISTICALLY, OUR SCHOOLS ARE SAFER THAN THEY HAVE EVER BEEN
IN 20, 30 YEARS. >> >>PEGGY: PRETTY MUCH SINCE THE 70S.
WENDY, SO, THIS OREGON SHOOTING, THE SHOOTING IN WISCONSIN, THE SHOOTING IN COLORADO, HOW
IS THIS ONE PARTICULARLY STOOD OUT FOR YOU THAT IS DIFFERENT?
>> >>: THERE'S OBVIOUSLY LOTS OF SIMILARITIES BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL SENSELESS IN MAKING THE
POINT THERE'S NOTHING TO BE GAIN BID GOING IN AND SHOOTING UP A SCHOOL OR A MOVIE THEATER
OR WHAT HAVE YOU. YOU NOTE THIS YOUNG MAN, HOWEVER, WAS WEARING
A BULLET PROOF VEST. IT'S DIFFERENT THAN SOME OF THE OTHER SHOOTINGS
WHERE SOMEBODY GOES IN EXPECTING TO BE KILLED, DEATH BY SUICIDE BASICALLY IS WHAT WE CALL
THAT. ONE OF THE OTHER THINGS THAT I THINK DISTINGUISHES
THIS IS MATTHEW HOLMES FOR EXAMPLE, MANY PEOPLE SAY THAT WAS A CALL FOR ATTENTION.
THERE WAS A HOT OFハ A LOT THAT HE DID TO SORT OF GLAMORIZE THE CHARACTER, THE OUTFIT,
THE COSTUME, SAYING I'M THE JOKER, VERY DIFFERENT THAN THIS WHERE WE'RE HEARING RUMORS OF A
MOTIVE. >> >>PEGGY: LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR BOOK.
IT TALKS ABOUT BEING ABLE TO READ PEOPLE AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS WATT CAN WE LEARN? IS
THERE A PROFILE THAT A MASS MURDERハ I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT TODAY'S BECAUSE IT'S TOO
SOON TO TELL, THAT WE CAN LEARN FROM THESE PREVIOUS SHOOTINGS?
>> >>: THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION. WHAT HAPPENS IT'S THE SAME IN EVERY CASE.
NEIGHBORS SE S SAY HE WAS SUCH A NICE GUY, CALM, AND SWEET, AND KIND, BUT AS INVESTIGATION
CONTINUES WE START INVESTIGATING SOMEONE'S ONLINE PROFILE, HEAR ABOUT THINGS LIKE SENDING
THE FAMOUS SPIRAL NOTE BOOK THAT MATTHEW HOLMES SENT TO THE PSYCHIATRIST.
WE LEARN MORE BEHIND THE SCENES THAT LET YOU KNOW THAT EVEN A COLLEGE GRADUATE PHD STUDENTS,
EVEN WELL INTENTIONED IN SOME RESPECTS INTELLIGENT PEOPLE ARE CAPABLE OF STRATEGIZING THIS KIND
OF VIOLENCE WHICH IS SCARY. IT'S NOT SOMEBODY WHO JUST DOES IT AIMLESSLY.
>> >>PEGGY: IT IS SCARY, AND I THINK ONE OF THE THINGS IS THAT IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE
BECAUSE OFハ I MIGHT CRY ABOUT THISハ BECAUSE OF THE CHILDREN, I THINK IT HOLDS DIFFERENT
SIGNIFICANCE. SO WHAT DOハ WHAT DO WE NEED TO KNOW TO SORT
OF GET HOLD OF THIS AND SORT OF COMFORT OURSELVES? >> >>: THIS IS HITTING PEOPLE IN A VERY DIFFERENT
WAY BECAUSE IT'S CHILDREN. IT'S A LARGE NUMBER OF CHILDREN.
AND WE EXPECT OUR CHILDREN TO BE SAFE. WE EXPECT OUR CHILDREN, HOPE OUR CHILDREN
CAN BE PROTECTED. WE'RE GOING TO BE WATCHING VIDEO OF MANY GRIEVING
PARENTS. SO I THINK IT'S IMPORT TONIGHT TAKE OUR TIME
WITH SOMEONE CLOSE A FRIEND, A RELATIVE, A HUSBAND A WIFE, AND DO THE CRIME WE NEED TO
DO. IT'S IMPORTANT TO BE REAL WITH THOSE EMOTIONS.
AND LET THAT OUT AND THEN GATHER OURSELVES TOGETHER WHEN WE'RE WITH OUR CHILDREN WE CAN
BE LEADERS, WE CAN BE THE ANSWER, WE CAN BE THOSE THAT SOOTH AND PROTECT.
>> >>PEGGY: ALL RIGHT, WE ARE OUT OF TIME. AND OBVIOUSLY I NEED A LITTLE SOOTHING AND
PROTECTING MYSELF. I'LL TAKE YOU UP ON THOSE Y.HOPE WE ALL WILL.
SO THANK YOU BOTH SO MUCH FOR TALKING WITH US TODAY.
>> >>DWANE: NOW FOR SOME OF THE OTHER STORIES. LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL HAS DELAYED STEPPING
INTO THE FIGHT OF THE SAN ONOFRE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT.
THEY WERE EXPECTING TO CONSIDER RESOLUTION FRIDAY URGING FEDERAL REGULATORS TO HOLD HEARINGS
BEFORE LETTING THE PLANT GO BACK ONLINE. SAN ONOFRE'S BEEN SHUT SINCE JANUARY.
L.A. COUNCIL MEMBERS ARE DELAYING THE RESOLUTION FOR MORE STUDY. THE FAMILY OF A SLAIN BORDER
PATROL AGENT IS SUING FEDERAL PATROL AGENTS. AGENT BRIAN TERRY WAS KILLED IN 2010 IN ARIZONA.
THE MURDER WEAPON WAS TRACED TO A FAILED PROGRAM TO CATCH GUN RUNNERS.
DARRELL ISSA IS LEADING INVESTIGATION INTO THE PROGRAM.
COUNT ADISTRICT ATTORNEY BONNIE DUMANIS FILED CHARGES TODAY AGAINST 28 ALLEGED CAR TELL
MEMBERS. SMUGGLING RING.
FRONTERAS REPORTER ADRIAN FLORIDO JOINS US WITH MORE ON THIS CASE.
TELL US ABOUT THE NIGHT'S TEMPLAR CARTEL. WHO ARE THEY?
>> >>ADRIAN: THE KNIGHT SAID TEMPLAR CARTEL IS A SHOOT OFF OF A MORE ESTABLISHED CARTEL,
ACCORDING TO THE DA, IT'S A SHOOT OFF THAT HAS BEEN SMUGGLING REALLY LARGE QUANTITIES
OF METHAMPHETAMINE AND OTHER DRUGS INTO THE UNITED STATES BY WAY OF SAN DIEGO.
TODAY, THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY ANNOUNCED CHARGES AGAINST 28 PEOPLE.
IT WAS THE RESULTハ THE CHARGES WERE THE RESULT OF A TWO YEAR INVESTIGATION UNDER TAKEN
A PARTNERSHIP WITH A DRUG ENFORCEMENT AGENCY TARGETING MEMBERS OF THIS CARTEL OPERATING
HERE IN SAN DIEGO AND ACROSS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. >> >>DWANE: AND THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY AND
DEA ARE DESCRIBING THIS AS A MAJOR BLOW TO THE CARTEL.
HOW BIG OF A DISRUPTION IS THIS? >> >>ADRIAN: IT'S HARD TO TELL.
THEY DIDN'T FILE CHARGES AGAINST 28 PEOPLE, ARRESTED 15 OF THOSE.
BUT TODAY AT THE NEWS CONFERENCE THE D. A. HELD WITH THE DEA AGENTS THEY DIDN'T GO INTO
THE SPECIFIC ROLES THESE DEFENDANTS PLAYED IN THIS CARTEL.
THE DEA DID DESCRIBE THEM AS MID TO HIGH LEVEL DRUG TRAFFICKERS.
IT'S HARD TO TELL HOW BIG THIS CARTEL IS AND HOW MANY PEOPLE THEY HAVE AT THEIR DISPOSAL
HERE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, AND SOUTH OF THE BORDER.
WHEN WE SEE THESE BIG DRUG BUSTS, THE PEOPLE WHO ARE TAKEN OUT BY AUTHORITIES ARE REPLACED
BY PEOPLE WHO THE DRUG CARTEL RECRUITS TO REPLACE THEM.
SO IT'S HARD TO TELL EXACTLY HOW BIG OF A BLOW IT WILL BE.
THE D. A. SAYS IT'S A BIG BLOW. WE'LL HAVE TO SEE.
>> >>DWANE: OUR FRONTERAS REPORTER, ADRIAN FLORIDO.
BOARD PATROL SAYS IT WON'T DO ANYMORE TRANSLATING FOR LAW ENFORCE AGENCIES CRITICISM OF AGENTS
ALONG THE U.S. BORDER OF CANADA WHO WERE CALLED TO TRANSLATE FOR POLICE DEPARTMENTS.
THE NEW RULES ARE NOT EXPECTED TO HAVE MUCH IMPACT ON THE BOARD WITH MEXICO.
AGENCIES ON THE SOUTHERN BORDER USUALLY HAVE PLENTY OF SPANISH SPEAKER.
THB OF HOMELESS VETERANS DECLINED NATIONALLY IN THIS YEAR BUT AS PEGGY PICO FINDS OUT ON
OUR FRIDAY ROUND TABLE THE NUMBER OF HOMELESS VETS IN SAN DIEGO IS GOING IN THE OPPOSITE
DIRECTION. >> >>PEGGY: THE U.S. DEPARTMENTS OF VETERANS
AFFAIRS AND HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT REPORT A 7% DROP IN THE NUMBERS OF HOMELESS
VETERANS THROUGHOUT THE U.S. THIS PAST YEAR. BUT NOT IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY.
THOSE NUMBERS ACTUALLY ROSE HERE. JOINING ME ON OUR WEEKLY ROUND TABLE WITH
DETAILS FROM A RECENT REPORT IS JEANETTE STEELE OF UT SAN DIEGO.
THANKS FOR JOINING US. HOW MANY HOMELESS VETERANS ARE THERE IN SAN
DIEGO RIGHT NOW? >> >>JEANETTE STEELE: RIGHT, SO, ON ONE NIGHT
IN JANUARY EVERY YEAR THEY COUNT HOMELESS VETERANS AND THEY DISCOVERED THAT THERE WERE
A LITTLE MORE THAN 1750 IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY. >> >>PEGGY: SO THAT'S UP.
>> >>JEANETTE STEELE: ABOUT A HUNDRED FROM THE PRIOR JANUARY.
>> >>PEGGY: MORE THAN A THOUSAND VETERANS ATTENDED SAN DIEGO STAND DOWN THIS PAST SUMMER.
WE HAVE SOME VIDEO OF THAT SO PEOPLE CAN SEE THAT.
HOW DO THE NUMBERS OF HOMELESS VETS HERE COMPARE TO THE REST OF THE NATION?
>> >>JEANETTE STEELE: RIGHT, WELL, WHAT WE CAN TELL IS THAT SAN DIEGO PS ONE OF THE BIGGEST
CONCENTRATIONS OF NEW VETERANS OF POST 9/11 VETERANS WITH & WE KNOW NATIONALLY THAT POST
9/11 VETERANS ARE ABOUT 9% OF ALL HOMELESS VETERANS IMEEVMENT THAT FIVE STATES INCLUDING
CALIFORNIA HAVE THE MOST MORE THAN HALF OF THE NATION PF HOMELESS.
>> >>PEGGY: YEAH, TEXAS, CALIFORNIA, AND GEORGIA I THINK.
>> >>JEANETTE STEELE: UH HUH, AND NEW YORK. >> >>PEGGY: SO WE'RE IN THE UPPER ECHELON.
WHAT DOES THE VA SAY THAT'S BEHIND THIS HIGHER NUMBER OF VETERANS ESPECIALLY HERE IN SAN
DIEGO. >> >>JEANETTE STEELE: RIGHT, AND WHY IS IT
IN CONTRAST TO THE NATIONAL TREND? THEY DON'T HAVE REALLY GOOD ANSWERS BUT HERE ARE SOME
ELEMENTS IT MIGHT BE HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT HERE. IT'S HIGHER THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.
WE KNOW THAT THOUSANDS OF MARINES AND SAILORS ARE DISCHARGED HERE IN SAN DIEGO EVERY YEAR,
AND SO THEY'RE CONCENTRATED HERE. IN THAT KIND OF FRAGILE TIME THEY'RE TRYING
TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO BECOME A CIVILIAN AND GETTING A JOB.
WE ALSO KNOW EVERY YEAR IT SEEMS MORE PEOPLE WANT TO GO OUT AND BE PART OF THIS COUNT THEY
DO EVERY JANUARY. THIS YEAR THEY WERE 750 PEOPLE WENT OUT TO
DO THE COUNT. THERE'S ONE THEORY THAT YOU HAVE MORE PEOPLE
ARE COUNTING THEY'RE NECESSARILY GOING TO FIND MORE VETERANS.
>> >>PEGGY: SO THAT MIGHT BEハ >> >>JEANETTE STEELE: THEY'RE GOING TO FIND
MORE. >> >>PEGGY: NOT NECESSARILY THAT THERE'S NOT
MUCH MORE, WE MAY BE COUNTING THEM MORE EFFICIENTLY. >> >>JEANETTE STEELE: YEAH.
>> >>PEGGY: WHAT ABOUT IN SAN DIEGO, IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE, LET'S SAY MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES,
LACK OF ABILITY TO GET THESE SERVICES PEOPLE NEED TO GET THAT YOU THINK MAYBE COULD CONTRIBUTE
TO THE PROBLEM OF US HAVING TO GO AGAINST THE NATIONAL TREND?
>> >>JEANETTE STEELE: THE VA HAS THIS PROGRAM TO TRY TO END HOMELESSNESS AMONG VETERANS
BY 2015. THEY'RE POURING A TON OF RESOURCES INTO IT.
THE PROBLEM IS JUST REALLY OUR VETERANS PLUGGING INTO THESE RESOURCES.
AND SOME OF THE REASONS THEY MIGHT NOT BE PLUGGING INTO THE RESOURCES ARE SUBSTANCE
ABUSE, NOT JUST NOT KNOWING ABOUT THE RESOURCES THAT ARE THERE, AND JUST NOT BEING KIND OF
READY TO ADDRESS WHATEVER ISSUES ARE IN THEIR LIVES THAT ARE NOT ALLOWING THEM TO HAVE A
NORMAL LIFE. >> >>PEGGY: LET'S TALK MORE ABOUT THAT.
IT'S PRESIDENT OBAMA WHO STARTED THIS YOU AND I WERE TALKING YEARS AGO.
BY 2015, THAT'S ONLY TWO YEARS FROM NOW, HE SAID HE WANTS TO END HOMELESSNESS AMONG VETERANS.
THE VA HAS EAR MARKED 300ハBILLION DOLLARS TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN.
HERE IN SAN DIEGO, THERE'S SOME PROGRAMS, SOME NEW PROGRAMS SO WHAT'S OUT THERE AS FAR
AS WHAT'S NEW FOR VETERANS? >> >>JEANETTE STEELE: RIGHT, SO IN THE LAST
COUPLE YEARS THEY HAVE ANNOUNCED NEW PROGRAMS HERE IN SAN DIEGO.
ONE OF THEM JUST LAST WEEK THE VA SECRETARY ANNOUNCED THEY WERE GOING TO TRIPLE THE AMOUNT
OF FUNDING FOR SUPPORTIVE SERVICES FOR VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES.
THIS IS A PROGRAM THAT'S MAYBE ONLY A YEAR OR TWO OLD IN SAN DIEGO.
YOU CAN GET HELP FOR COVERING YOUR MORTGAGE HELP KIND OF MAKINGハ IT'S A BRIDGE HELP
IF YOU NEED IT TO TRY TO NOT FALL INTO BECOMINGハHOMELESS AND THEN CHRONICALLY HOMELESS.
ANOTHER PROGRAM IS A DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM HERE.
IT'S TRYING TO FOCUS ON YOUNG VETS. WE'RE ONE OF FIVE CITIES IN THE NATION THAT
HAS IT. THIS IS A SIMILAR KIND OF THING WHERE WE'LL
GIVE YOU BRIDGE MONEY TO COVER UTILITIES OR YOUR RENT SO YOU STAY IN YOUR HOUSE.
ONE OF THE MORE EXCITING THINGS AND EXPENSIVE IS THIS SPIER CENTER THE VA PLANS TO OPEN
IN OLD TOWN, ONE OF FIVE IN THE NATION. IT'S 40 BEDS AND FOR YOUNGER VETERANS WHO
NEED MORE VETERAN WHOSE NEED MORE HELP THAN JUST OUT PATIENT THERAPY, BUT DON'T NEED TO
BE HOSPITALIZED AT THE LA JOLLA VA. >> >>PEGGY: WHERE SHOULD FAMILIES TURN IF
THEY REALIZE THAT SOMEBODY IN THEIR FAMILY IS STRUGGLING AS A VETERAN?
>> >>JEANETTE STEELE: THE VA IN LA JOLLA IS ACTUALLY VETERANS IN THE COMMUNITY SAY THEY
GIVE QUITE GOOD CARE HERE. I KNOW THE VA GETS A BAD REP, BUT THEY DO
HAVE INCREASED THE NUMBER OF MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELORS HERE, THERE ARE A NUMBER OF 1800
NUMBERS, THERE'S MY I THINK IT'S CALLED MY VET IS THE WEBSITE.
SO YOU JUST BASICALLY HAVE TO CALL AND GET TIED IN.
>> >>PEGGY: REACH OUT. REACH OUT AND MAYBE START AT THE VETERANS
HAWS. WE'RE OUT OF TIME, SO JEANETTE STEELE OF UT
SAN DIEGO, THANKS FOR TALK WITHING US. >> >>DWANE: A PHENOMENON CALLED TINNING TIDES
PUSHED OCEAN LEVEL UP IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY FOR SECOND STRAIGHT DAY.
THE HIGH OCEAN LEVELS ARE PROMPTING ENVIRONMENTALIST TO TALK ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE.
KPBS BUSINESS AND ENVIRONMENT REPORTER ERIK ANDERSON JOINS US.
WHAT ARE KING TIDES, ERIK? >> >>ERIK: AS YOU MIGHT HAVE ALREADY IMAGINED,
THEY ARE IN FACT THE KING OF TIDES. OCEAN LEVELS AROUND SAN DIEGO COUNTY PEEKED
AT ABOUT 930 PIS THIS MORNING THANKS TO A COLLECTIVE GRAVITATIONAL NUDGE FROM THE EARTH,
MOON, AND THE SUN. THESE TIDES ARE THE HIGHEST OF THIS YEAR AND
THE IMPACT WAS KIND OF TRAUMATIC WHEN IT PEEKED. >> >>DWANE: LAST NIGHT WAS THE NEW MOON.
SO WHAT HAPPENED? >> >>ERIK: WELL, I'VE GOT SOME PICTURES FOR
YOU TO LOOK AT. THE WATER LEVELS IN SAN DIEGO BAY ROSE ABOUT
EIGHT FEET ABOVE THEIR NORMAL LEVELS. TOOK A MORNING RIDE AROUND THE BAY TO SEE
WHAT THE IMPACT WAS, AND WATER ABOUT A FOOT AND A HALF BELOW THE GLASS WINDOWS AT THE
FISH MARKET RESTAURANT. BAY SIDE IN COLORADO, COMPLETELY SUBMERGED,
SOME POCKET BEACHES WERE UNDER WATER, AND THE WET LANDS NEAR THE SOUTH BAY POWER PLANT
WERE COMPLETELY SUBMERGED. >> >>DWANE: HOW DOES CLIMATE CHANGE FIT INTO
THIS EQUATION? >> >>ERIK: COAST KEEPER TRAVIS PRICHARD TOLD
ME THIS COULD BE THE NEW NORMAL IF CLIMATE CHANGE PUSHES UP THE LEVEL OF THE OCEAN.
THAT COULD HAVE AN IMPACT ON LIFE NEAR THE COAST.
ADDING A HIGH TIDE OR STORM SURGE ON TOP OF WHAT WE HAD TODAY.
HE SAYS OTHER AREAS WOULD BE AFFECTED AS WELL BECAUSE THOSE HIGHER OCEAN LEVELS WOULD SUBMERGE
STORM DRAINS THAT EMPTY IN THE DRAIN, AND WOULD BACK UP AND FLOOD NEIGHBORHOODS.
PRICHARD DOES SAY IT'S KIND OF A WARNING LIGHT FOR THE FUTURE.
>> >>DWANE: KPBS BUSINESS AND ENVIRONMENT REPORTER, ERIK ANDERSON.
STORMY WEB WEATHER ALSO TENDS TO BRING BIGGER WAVES.
WE CAN EXPECT WAVE RAIN THROUGH THE WEEKEND. INLAND TEMPERATURES WILL BE JUST A BIT COLDER
FOR THE COAST. IT LOOKS LIKE THE DESERT WILL BE OUR DRY SPOT.
>> >>: ON THE NEXT NEWS HOUR, A REPRIEVE FROM DEPORTATION FOR SOME YOUNG IMMIGRANTS PLUS
SHIELDS AND BROOKS, FRIDAY ON THE PBS NEWS HOUR.
>> >>PEGGY: IN TONIGHT'S PUBLIC SQUARE, WE WANTED TO SHARE SOME OF YOUR REACTION TO TODAY'S
SHOOTING. WE ASKED YOU WATT YOU THINK WE CAN DO TO PREVENT
MORE HORRIFIC TRAGEDIES LIKE THIS IN THE FUTURE. SEVERAL PEOPLE BROUGHT UP THE ISSUE OF GUN
CONTROL. AND JASON BORALDI WROTE:
KPBS WILL EXPLORE THE ISSUE OF GUN CONTROL AND SAFETY NEXT WEEK.
YOU CAN JOIN IN ON THIS CONVERSATION OR COMMENT ON ANY KPBS NEWS STORY BY FOLLOWING US ON
TWITTER, LIKING US ON FACEBOOK, OR JUST E MAIL US AT PUBLIC SQUARE @ KPBS.ORG.
>> >>DWANE: NEIGHBORS OF NEWTOWN GATHERED AT A CHURCH TONIGHT TO MOURN THOSE LOST IN
TODAY'S SHOOTING. POLICE HAVE NOT RELEASED MANY DETAILS WHAT
WE DO KNOW FOR CERTAIN; 20 CHILDREN ARE DEAD, SIX ADULTS WERE ALSO KILLED AT SANDY HOOK
ELEMENTARY THIS MORNING. BEFORE THE GUNMAN TOOK HIS OWN LIFE, THERE
IS ONE OTHER VICTIM AT A HOME IN THE AREA. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTS IT'S THE GUNMAN'S
MOTHER WHO WAS A TEACHER AT THE SCHOOL. THAT INFORMATION HAS NOT YET BEEN CONFIRMED
BY POLICE. THEY DO PLAN ANOTHER BELIEVING TOMORROW.
IN THE MEAN TIME, PRESIDENT OBAMA SAYS THE NATION HAS EXPERIENCED TOO MANY TRAGEDIES
LIKE TODAY'S SHOOTING AND IS CALLING FOR MEANINGFUL ACTION TO PREVENT MORE OF THEM.
HE'S ORDERED FLAGS TO BE LOWERED AT HALF STAFF. TODAY'S SHOOTING HAS PUT THE COUNTRY INTO
MOURNING AND IT'S ESPECIALLY DIFFICULT FOR CHILDREN. THE COUNTY'S BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES
HAS A 24 HOUR HOT LINE FOR ANYONE WHO NEEDS HELP COPING.
THAT NUMBER IS ON THE SCREEN, (888)724 7240. AND PBS NEWS HOUR WILL HAVE MORE ON THIS STORY
IN JUST A MOMENT. WE WILL KEEP THIS STORY UPDATED ON KPBS.ORG.
THANKS FOR JOINING US TONIGHT. GOODNIGHT.
